What chord is this?

Mark the notes on the guitar neck, the keyboard or the note list and see the chord name right away. The lowest note counts as the bass: C, E and G with E in the bass is C/E (C major, first inversion). When the same notes have more than one name, the alternatives show up too, like C6 and Am7/C.

Tap one fret on each string (0 is the open string). A string with no note doesn't sound.

How the chord name is found

The page compares the marked notes (ignoring repeats and octaves) with the most common chord types, trying every note as the root. The winner is the name that uses exactly the marked notes, preferably with the root in the bass. If the bass is another note of the chord, it is an inversion (C/E); if it is not in the chord, it is a slash chord with a foreign bass (F/G). Four-note chords without the fifth are recognised too, because that is how many of them are played.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the name of a chord?

List the notes and find the root: the note from which the others stack in thirds (C-E-G). The distance from each note to the root gives the type: major third and perfect fifth is a major chord; minor third, minor; add a minor seventh and it is a seventh chord.

What does C/E mean?

C major with E in the bass. The slash separates the chord from the lowest note. When the bass note belongs to the chord it is an inversion; when it doesn't (like F/G), it is a different bass note that colours the chord.

What is a chord inversion?

The chord with another of its notes in the bass instead of the root. With the third in the bass it is the 1st inversion (C/E), with the fifth the 2nd (C/G), and with the seventh the 3rd (C7/B♭).

Why do the same notes have two names?

Some chords share their notes: C, E, G and A make C6 and also Am7. The bass note and the song decide; with C in the bass, the usual name is C6.
