Frequently asked questions
What is harmony in music?
It is the part of music about chords: which notes sound together and how one chord leads to the next. In practice it means knowing the key of a song, the chords that belong to it (the diatonic chords) and how to move everything to another key.
What are the chords in a key?
The seven chords built from the notes of the key's scale, stacking thirds on each note. In C major: C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am and B°. Most popular songs use mainly the chords of their key.
What is the circle of fifths for?
It lays out the 12 keys a fifth apart: each step clockwise adds a sharp to the key signature. Neighbouring keys share almost all their notes, which is why modulating to them sounds natural; the relative minors sit on the inside.
