How to read the diagrams
The neck is drawn lying on its side, like tablature: the highest string is on top. Each dot is a note of the scale, and the root is highlighted. Switch between Notes and Degrees to see the role of each note, pick a position to study one part of the neck at a time, and tap Listen to hear it.
Frequently asked questions
Which scales should I learn first?
Start with the minor pentatonic and the major scale: together they cover most solos and melodies. The major pentatonic, the blues scale and the Greek modes come next.
What is a scale position or box?
It is one section of the neck, four or five frets wide, where the whole scale fits without moving your hand. Playing the scale in every position connects the entire fretboard.
Do the diagrams work for electric guitar?
Yes. Acoustic and electric guitars share the same tuning, so a scale diagram works for both. There are also diagrams for bass, ukulele and cavaquinho.
