Frequently asked questions
Which scales should I practice first on piano?
Start with C major, which uses only white keys, with fingers 1-2-3-1-2-3-4-5 in the right hand. Then go to G, D and F major and to the A, E and D minor scales, practicing hands separately before putting them together.
Why does the thumb pass under in a scale?
Because the hand has five fingers and the octave has eight notes. The thumb passes under the other fingers (and they cross over it) so the hand keeps going without stopping or jumping. Standard fingerings avoid putting the thumb on a black key.
How many piano scales are here?
18 types in 12 keys: 216 piano scales, each with the keyboard, the degrees, the formula and the sound.
