What is the best key for your voice?

Enter the lowest and the highest note of the melody (the sung part) and, if you know it, the original key. The page checks them against your vocal range, saved on this device by the vocal range test, and shows the key that puts the melody in your comfortable range, how many semitones to go up or down and a capo position for easy shapes.

You haven't taken the vocal range test on this device yet.

How to find the lowest and highest notes of the melody

  1. Sing (or play) the melody and look for the lowest and the highest passage. The high part is usually in the chorus.
  2. Use the voice tuner to see the name of the note you sang, or find the note on the guitar or piano.
  3. Enter both notes as they are in the recording. If the singer is a woman and you are a man (or the other way round), the page already considers singing an octave lower or higher.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the best key to sing a song?

Compare the range of the melody (from its lowest to its highest note) with your comfortable range. The best key puts the whole melody inside it, ideally in the middle. This page does the maths for all 12 keys.

What is my vocal range?

It goes from the lowest to the highest note you can hold with a steady voice. The vocal range test measures it with the microphone in about two minutes and saves the result on this device.

Does lowering the key help with the high notes?

Yes: lowering the key lowers every note by the same amount. But the lowest note goes down too, and if it falls out of your range the low part gets weak. The best key balances both ends.

Can a man sing a woman's song in the same key?

Yes, by singing an octave lower: the key is the same, only the register changes. Sometimes a few semitones of adjustment are still needed for the melody to fit.
