Second voice in thirds in B major

In B major, a second voice in thirds sings, above each note of the scale, the note of the key two steps higher: B–D♯, C♯–E, D♯–F♯, E–G♯, F♯–A♯, G♯–B, A♯–C♯. The third is major above B, E, and F♯ and minor above C♯, D♯, G♯, and A♯.

The B major scale with the second voice

Each row is a degree of the B major scale: the melody note, the second-voice note and the interval between them.

I B D♯ major third
II C♯ E minor third
III D♯ F♯ minor third
IV E G♯ major third

Strictness

To find the third above, count two notes up the B major scale: from B, skip C♯ and land on D♯. Because the count stays within the key, both voices always sing notes of B major, and the size of the third changes with the degree: a major third is 4 semitones and a minor third is 3.

In B major, the major thirds fall on degrees I, IV, and V and the minor ones on degrees II, III, VI, and VII. That is why the second voice is not the melody copied a little higher: it follows the same shape but alternates major and minor thirds to stay in the key.

If the third above gets too high for whoever sings the second voice, sing the sixth below: the same note, an octave lower. It is what Brazilian country duos do when the melody climbs.
