Twin guitars in thirds in G major

In G major, the second guitar plays a third above the first, note by note: G–B, A–C, B–D, C–E, D–F♯, E–G, F♯–A. The third is major above G, C, and D and minor above A, B, E, and F♯, and the table shows the string and fret of every note on both guitars.

The G major scale with the second voice

Each row is a degree of the G major scale: the melody note, the second-voice note and the interval between them.

Degree Guitar 1 Guitar 2 Interval
I G string 4, fret 5 B string 3, fret 4 major third
II A string 4, fret 7 C string 3, fret 5 minor third
III B string 3, fret 4 D string 2, fret 3 minor third
IV C string 3, fret 5 E string 1, fret 0 major third

Strictness

With twin guitars, the second guitar plays the same melody a third higher, in the same rhythm and always within the key. The two sound like one wider guitar, and the third changes size with the degree: on the same string, a major third is 4 frets apart and a minor third 3. In G major, the major ones fall on degrees I, IV, and V.

The positions in the table are chosen so both guitars play in the same area of the neck, with little hand movement. The guitar sounds an octave lower than written on the staff; the frets are the same.

To play both voices on your own, the tool’s Guitars view has the “One guitar (double stops)” option: the two notes on different strings, at most 4 frets apart.

Can you play both voices on one guitar?

Yes, as double stops. In the tool’s Guitars view, choose “One guitar (double stops)”: the two voices go on different strings, at most 4 frets apart.
