How to read the keyboard
The colored keys are the notes of the chord. Each one shows the note name and the degree: 1 is the root, 3 the third, 5 the fifth, 7 the seventh. The root has the strongest color. The small dot marks middle C (C4).
There are 420 chords: the 12 notes combined with 35 types, from major and minor to sevenths, diminished, sus and ninth chords. Each page has the keyboard with the notes, the inversions, the formula and the sound.
Frequently asked questions
How many piano chords are in this chart?
There are 420 chords: the 12 notes combined with 35 chord types. Each one has the keyboard with the highlighted keys, the inversions, the formula and the sound.
Which piano chords should I learn first?
Start with the major and minor chords that use only white keys: C, F, G, Am, Dm, Em. They already cover a lot of songs. Then move on to seventh chords and chords with black keys.
What is a chord inversion?
It is the same chord with a different note in the bass. C major (C E G) becomes E G C in first inversion and G C E in second inversion. Inversions let your hand move very little from one chord to the next.
What do the finger numbers mean?
On both hands, 1 is the thumb, 2 the index finger, 3 the middle finger, 4 the ring finger and 5 the little finger. "Right hand 1-3-5" means thumb, middle and little finger.
Do these chords work on a keyboard or digital piano?
Yes. The notes and inversions are the same on any keyboard instrument: acoustic piano, digital piano, keyboard, organ or synthesizer.
