Treble clef notes

The notes on the lines of the treble clef, from bottom to top, are E, G, B, D, and F; in the spaces, F, A, C, and E. The treble clef marks the 2nd line as G: from there, each line and space is the next note.

Mnemonics

  • Lines, from the bottom: Every Good Boy Does Fine (E, G, B, D, and F). Spaces spell FACE (F, A, C, and E).
  • Landmarks: the treble clef curls around the 2nd line, which is G; middle C is on the ledger line below. Find the nearest landmark and count one note per line and space.
  • The note in the 1st space (F) comes back on the 5th line, an octave higher; the C in the 3rd space is middle C an octave up.

Who reads treble clef

Violin, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, ukulele, the soprano and alto voices and the piano’s right hand. Guitar too, but it sounds an octave lower than written.

Frequently asked questions

What are the notes of the treble clef?

On the lines, from bottom to top: E, G, B, D, and F. In the spaces: F, A, C, and E. Just below the staff is D, and middle C sits on the 1st ledger line.

Why is it called the G clef?

Its shape grew out of a stylized letter G, and its curl wraps around the 2nd line: any note on that line is G.

Where is middle C in the treble clef?

On the 1st ledger line below the staff. On the piano it is the C nearest the middle of the keyboard (C4).

How do I memorize the treble clef notes?

Use Every Good Boy Does Fine for the lines and FACE for the spaces, plus landmarks (G on the 2nd line, middle C on the ledger line below). Then practice a few minutes a day: instant recognition comes with repetition.

Is guitar music written in treble clef?

Yes. Guitar music uses the treble clef, but the instrument sounds an octave lower than written (sometimes the clef has a small 8 below it as a reminder).
