Samba guitar rhythm
The samba guitar rhythm (a simplified version) is played with thumb and fingers in 2/4: the thumb plays the bass on 1 and 2, and the index, middle and ring fingers pluck the three high strings together (a "pinch"). Splitting each beat into four sixteenth notes: thumb on the 1st, pinch on the 2nd and the 4th.

How to play it
- The bass on 2 is the strongest, like the surdo drum in a samba band.
- The thumb alternates: the root of the chord on 1 and the fifth (another low string) on 2.
- Each finger stays on its string (i on 3, m on 2, a on 1) and all three pluck together, towards the palm.
- Start very slowly and only speed up once the thumb is steady.
Common mistakes
- Pulling the pinch away from the guitar so the strings snap.
- A weak thumb on 2: that is where the groove comes from.
- Speeding up before the thumb is automatic.

Frequently asked questions
Can I play samba with a pick?
You can, but the traditional samba guitar rhythm is played with the fingers: the thumb plays the role of the surdo and the fingers play the syncopations on the high strings.
Is this the only samba rhythm?
No: it is the simplified base. Players move the pinches around and add bass runs, but almost everything grows from a steady thumb on both beats.
