Waltz strumming pattern
The waltz strumming pattern is "bass, chord, chord" in 3/4: on 1 the pick (or thumb) plays only the bass note of the chord, and on 2 and 3 you strum the high strings downwards. Count "1, 2, 3" with 1 the loudest.

How to play it
- The bass on 1 is the note that names the chord, on the lowest string of the shape.
- Let the bass ring while you strum 2 and 3.
- The strums on 2 and 3 are softer than the bass.
- Fingerstyle version: thumb on the bass, then index, middle and ring together on 2 and 3.
Common mistakes
- Counting in four out of habit and ending up with an extra beat.
- Accenting 2 or 3: the waltz needs a strong 1.

Frequently asked questions
Is a waltz always in 3/4?
Yes: a waltz is in triple time, three beats per bar with the first one strongest.
What is the difference between 3/4 and 6/8?
In 3/4 you feel three equal beats (1 2 3); in 6/8, two beats split in three (1 2 3 4 5 6, accents on 1 and 4). The 6/8 pattern has its own page.
